Does anyone know of a commercial insurance provider for my dump trucking company?
I am in search of a new commercial insurance provider. My current provider doesn’t treat me very well, even though I pay around $ 40,000 a year for worker’s compensation and coverage for my trucks and trailers.

Well, as you know, it’s not the kind of risk companies are eager to insure.

My guess is, the auto will end up someplace like Progressive, and you could try your state workers comp fund for the comp part of it.

Your options are limited, due to the size of your account – it’s a lot of money to you, I know, but in the insurance world, it’s generating about $ 3,000 of commission – and classified a small account. Sorry.

My response: it’s not always about the *commision* the estimated premium needs to cover the potential loss costs of the risk (your business) and as you know your liability on all lines is around $ 1MM so, the premium is just not enough in some cases.

Back to your question: Take lots of competative quotes at renewal. In addition to your State Fund try some large Direct Writers (Liberty Mutual, Hartford, Allstate etc) You may also want to look at agencies that specialize in your line of business.

It really depends on your owners. I have worked for several and they were both great. You get to set your own schedule and they are so busy you will always be booked. I love it so much I am looking into buying my own franchise.

Do not make the devastating error of attempting to insure your business without professional help. There are too many vulnerabilities you don’t want to expose yourself to. See a property and casualty agent or agency that specializes in business coverage.

I don’t know that you can. I have never heard of an online estimate for a business policy. Also, business insurance is complicated, it is not like a personal homeowners where most things are included, you have to buy almost every coverage separately and if you do not know what you are doing, you may be left uncovered in the event of a loss. Is it worth your financial loss & maybe the loss of your business to save a few dollars to buy online without an agent? Independent agents really know what they are doing when it comes to commercial insurance. They know the questions to ask and the proper coverage for you to have. Have you tried to call a few? If your business is very straightforward, sole proprietorship, you have no business autos or employees, you have minimal business contents and no building, I have seen business insurance for $ 500 minimum premium (some companies are going to $ 750 or $ 1000 minimum). You wouldn’t be saving anything online if you fall under the minimum premium. I think to do this to give up the support of an agent (they also can help you with claims) is very risky. Our commercial producers have actually gone to the scenes of fires to start the claims process (on weekends, when the fire dept was still there) – would a company online be able to do that?? If you do work for others, they may request certificates of insurance – a local agent could do these right away & you can pick them up – can an online company do that?

You can’t.

The reason is, business insurance isn’t as cut and dried as personal insurance, there are too many “what if’s”. “Small Business” premiums can range from $ 500, for a mom & pop bait shop, to $ 250,000, for the guy that makes a shim used in nuclear power plants, to anywhere in between. “Small” is in the eye of the beholder.

What exactly does physio massage therapy do?
I had a concussion awhile back by getting kneed in the back of the head. Well, that also caused a neck injury that’s giving me headaches. My doctor recommended that I get physio massage therapy but I’m not sure how that’s going to help.

Make sure you go to a real Physiotherapist (Physical Therapist). Chiropractors, and osteopaths outside the USA, are ignorant quacks who may try to perform so-called “cranial osteopathy”, a useless massage of the head.

I would be inclined to listen to my doctor. However, DO make sure you goto someone who is a real physiotherapist and not a chiropractor or osteopath. Some of the latter might well want to perform neck manipulation that could leave you crippled, maimed, or even dead.

Yes physiotherapy sounds like your best bet. Wikipedia has a good article which would give you more information. I would certainly avoid bone crunchers, they don’t sound too ‘stable’ to me.

Question About Small Business Insurance?
I am starting a new small rental business in Boston, MA and was wondering that the process is for getting business insurance. Is it just like getting car or homeowners insurance? Are the premiums the same as those, too (as far as monthly payments or one time per year payment)? If you started your own business, what steps did you take for insurance purposes?

Different companies will have different requirements and pre coverage conditions. Premiums will also vary sometimes by several hundred dollars. It is always a good idea to start with the company that carries your auto and home owners insurance so that you also may be able to be covered by an umbrella policy. Shop around for business insurance just as you would any other kind.

It’s NOT like car or house insurance. When you say rental business, it could mean, that you’re renting out apartments. Or, maybe you’re renting out jet skis, or automobiles. Or maybe heavy construction equipment. Or handguns.

New businesses, you don’t usually get a company to give you “monthly payments”. You CAN finance the premium, with a premium financing company, at roughly 20% interest.

Depending on the business type (and rental isn’t specific enough!), and the types of insurance you might need, you’re looking at $ 1,000 on up, for the insurance.

You are going to HAVE to contact a local, independent agent to get quotes. I’d suggest starting at www.abodeely.com , in Worcester.

Local, because they have to be licensed to sell insurance in MA. Indepdendent, because most likely, a captive agent isn’t going to be able to place the coverage.

There is a lot more detail required for business insurance than car or home insurance. Premiums can be monthly or annual.

Where can I find special event insurance?
I am hosting a 5k at my local park soon. They told me that in order to have the race I needed “special event insurance”; just a weekend policy with a $ 1 million liability and a $ 2 million aggregate. I’ve called around to a lot of local insurance companies and none of them offer this. Can you tell me where I can find this and how much it might cost? Thanks in advance for any help!

Any major insurance company can do that. Start by asking your insurance agent who may tell you about coverage from your company. Your city should also have referrals.

If you have homeowners insurance or renters insurance you can get a one time certification from your insurance agent.

If you don’t have it, get it so you can get your one time event certificate. Otherwise you might have to see a broker.

If you’re calling State Farm, Farmers, Allstate – that’s what the problem is. They DON’T offer this.

This is a specialty line of business. You need to call a local, INDEPENDENT agent, to get this policy. They will broker it – that means, they will find the company to GET that coverage.

You can locate an independent agent near you by putting your zip code in to www.iiaba.net and a whole bunch of names and numbers will pop up, near YOUR zip code. Or, if your auto or homeowners is through an independent agent, you can call them.

Expect this to cost around $ 250 to $ 500, depending on what city the park is located in.
